Monstery er síbreytileg innsetning sem umbreytir persónulegum byrðum í skúlptúrískar verur. Verkið byggir á einfaldri en róttækri hugmynd; að það sem við berum í kyrrþey, það sem er ósagt, óþægilegt eða of þungt til að sýna, geti öðlast líkamlegt form og orðið hluti af sameiginlegu rými.

Ferlið hefst hjá gestunum. Þeim er boðið að staldra við og skrifa niður hugsun sem hefur setið föst, hugsun sem hefur ekki fengið farveg. Þessi hugsun er ekki varðveitt sem texti, heldur er hún sett í Tilfinningatætarann þar sem merkingin molnar og verður að efnivið fyrir skrímslin. Orðin missa rödd sína en öðlast nýja tilvist sem hráefni. Úr rifnum pappírsleifum verður til undirstaða skrímsla sem vaxa smám saman í sýningarrýminu.

Þátttakendur geta komið og tætt óvelkomnar hugsanir á opnunartíma safnsins en á viðverutíma listamannanna geta þeir tekið virkari þátt í skúlptúrgerðinni:

Kl. 12–18 alla virka daga og 12–17 um helgar.

Á lokahófinu föstudaginn 13. mars berum við skrímslin augum, skálum fyrir þeim og kveðjum þau. 

Listrænt samhengi og þróun

Monstery er afrakstur margra ára rannsókna og tilrauna í þátttökulist. Helga og Karen hafa áður haldið Monstery verksmiðju fyrir börn, þar sem sögur og tilfinningar umbreytast í verur með skúlptúrgerð að vopni. Með tímanum bárust ítrekaðar óskir um að bjóða upp á Monstery fyrir fullorðna – og nú fær þessi nýja útgáfa, sem þátttökuverk, í fyrsta sinn að líta dagsins ljós.

Verkið hentar öllum sem langar að aftengja hugann og hugsa með höndunum í afslöppuðu rými. Engin teikni- eða skúlptúrreynsla er nauðsynleg.

Áhugi listamannanna á að umbreyta persónulegum frásögnum í efnislegt form, með áherslu á ferli og samvinnu, kristallast í þessu þátttökuverki.

Monstery er þátttökuverk unnið af Helgu Ósk Hlynsdóttur og Karen Briem. Markmiðið er að skapa skrímslalíki í yfirstærð úr pappamassa. Stígðu inn í öruggt rými til tilrauna og leiks og lærðu að búa til pappamassa .

Think With Your Hands and Give Shape to What You Carry.

Monstery is a continuously changing installation that transforms unwanted thoughts into sculptural beings. The work is built on a simple yet radical idea; that what we carry in silence, what remains unsaid, uncomfortable, or too heavy to show, can take on physical form and become part of a shared space.

The process begins with the visitors. They are invited to write down a thought that has been stuck, a thought that has not found its outlet. This confession is not preserved as text; instead, it is fed into the Mental shredder, where its meaning fragments and becomes material for the monsters. The words lose their voice but gain a new existence as raw material. From the torn paper remnants emerges the foundation of monsters that gradually grow within the exhibition space.

Participants are welcome to come and shred unwanted thoughts at any time during opening hours, and over the artists’ presence they can take a more active role in the sculptural process:

From 12 to 18 o'clock on weekdays and from 12 to 17 o'clock on weekends.

In the final exhibition on Friday the 13th of March we gather, toast to our Monsters, and bid them farwell.

Artistic Context & Development

Monstery is the culmination of several years of research and experimentation in participatory art. Helga and Karen previously hosted Monstery workshops for children, where playful creativity and sculptural practices transformed stories and emotions into creatures. Over time, they received repeated requests to offer Monstery for adults — and now, for the first time, this expanded version comes to life in the form of a participatory exhibition.

This development reflects the artists’ ongoing interest in transforming personal narratives into material form, with a strong emphasis on process, collaboration, and collective installation. Adults are invited into the same imaginative, hands-on practice, where burdens and ideas can be shaped, reimagined, and brought to life as sculptural monsters.
